Today.. the fish won, and still.. we had a great day on the flats.. chasing all kinds of fish. I think we made right around a million casts between me and my buddy Scott, and in the end.. did not land many fish.
Thank God for jacks..we did have a lot of fun catching them! We got out there at 10 a.m., and the wind wasn’t too bad (after two days in heavy wind and chop). We explored miles of flats, and mangrove shorelines, which was so fun.
After a day of struggling to put it all together, which included me hooking Scott in the cheek with a crab fly.. pretty deep too.. and him hooking me in the jugular with a treble hook.. not too deep, we came upon a flock of Pelicans diving on bait.
Scott was casting a top water walk the dog lure, while I stood by, fly rod in hand. The jacks were in the area feeding on the same bait as the Pelicans.. and they were a riot!
Scott would get them worked into a frenzy with his lure, and then I’d cast the fly into the school. The real challenge was to move the fly fast enough. At one point as we pulled two jacks near the boatside, a 6 foot shark surfaced, and chased our fish back and forth a couple times. It was really crazy to watch. The adventure continues…
